A recent investigation by Redbridge Council has led to a landlord and their managing agent being ordered to pay back over £91,000. This hefty sum comes after they continued to rent out a property that was deemed unsafe for more than a year, even after receiving a legal order to cease operations.

What happened: The landlord and agent were found guilty of violating a Prohibition Order and profiting from illegal activities.
Where it took place: A five-bedroom house in Wanstead, located in the London Borough of Redbridge.
When it was resolved: The case wrapped up at Snaresbrook Crown Court, with the outcome announced just this week.
Who it impacts: Private renters throughout Redbridge, particularly those living in unsafe conditions.

The investigation began when officers received a tip-off about the property being used for illegal drug cultivation and unlawfully siphoning electricity from the National Grid. Upon their first visit, they found the place empty and in disrepair. However, during a follow-up visit, they discovered ten unrelated men living there, along with five serious safety hazards.

In response, the council issued a Prohibition Order, which legally barred anyone from residing in the property until the identified hazards were addressed. Unfortunately, the landlord and agent chose to ignore this order for over a year. As a result, Snaresbrook Crown Court imposed fines, costs, and confiscation orders totaling £91,018.60 under the Proceeds of Crime Act.

What this means for you: If you're renting in Redbridge and your landlord is neglecting serious safety issues in your home, know that Redbridge Council has the authority to take action—and they are actively doing so.
