The new flyover is resurfaced. Lane markings are freshly painted along Eastern Avenue East. From the air, it looks done.

Look closer and the picture is less tidy — building materials still line the carriageway, and open pits along the A127 reveal pipework yet to be resolved. That pipework is the whole story.

TfL has completed its work. Essex & Suffolk Water, however, uncovered additional issues with the water main during final testing. No new opening date has been set. Both organisations have apologised. TfL says a partial reopening — flyover first, roundabout to follow — is being explored.

MP for Hornchurch and Upminster Julia Lopez offered the reaction many residents were thinking: "Surprise, surprise — we've been here before on this project."
